Force10 has historically focused on the 10 Gigabit Ethernet market, and would have a hard time surviving the telecom bust had it chased after the Gigabit market dominated by Cisco (CSCO), Extreme (EXTR), and Foundry (now part of Brocade (BRCD)). But with a new IEEE standard coming out next year promising even higher line rates, many are now wondering if a startup will be able to grab share from the traditional switch vendors by focusing on 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet. But I'm keeping one eye on the data center -- where Cisco apparently is preparing to launch blade servers. If true, I wonder: How soon will Cisco speed dial Red Hat (RHT), MySQL, Novell (NOVL), SugarCRM and other open source application providers?</p><p>Sure, Cisco already has relationships with a range of software companies. But <a href="http://www.thevarguy.com/2008/12/23/cisco-launching-blade-servers-yes-really/" >pushing into the fast-growing blade server market</a> will force Cisco to strengthen partnerships with operating system vendors, application providers, middleware developers and so on.</p>]]>

Three of the four existing investors increased their ownership stakes in the company. But Cisco led the round, highlighting the importance of enterprise e-mail for Xobni (that&rsquo;s where the money is). CEO Jeff Bonforte says</p><blockquote class="quote"><p>The people that use our product are professionals and corporate users (around 70% in North America), so we have always had a corporate focus (it is Outlook after all). We have been fielding a ton of demand to license our software for users in corporate environments&hellip;so we have been addressing that demand. Cisco&rsquo;s participation recognizes that Xobni is being used heavily by corporate users (and professionals like lawyers, real estate agents, etc). Cisco knows those customers really well, so this is a big bonus for us to have them helping us. </p></blockquote>]]>

        <![CDATA[<p><span>In the spirit of hedge fund manager Doug Kass' annual outlier prediction list </span>[<a href="http://www.fundmymutualfund.com/2008/01/doug-kass-20-predictions-for-2008.html" >Jan 2: Doug Kass 20 Predictions for 2008</a>]<span>, last year I decided to write</span> my own.  You can read my 13 Outlier 2008 Predictions here [<a href="http://www.fundmymutualfund.com/2007/12/13-outlier-2008-predictions.html" >Dec 31, 2007: 13 Outlier 2008 Predictions</a>] and a self assessment this past October [<a href="http://www.fundmymutualfund.com/2008/10/reviewing-our-13-outlier-2008.html" >Reviewing Our 13 Outlier 2008 Predictions</a>]. Ironically, Mr. Kass and I actually had a lot of similar calls for 2008, although I posted mine first (and I did so again this year so it doesn't appear I am stealing ideas)</p><p>Even more funny, we both went wrong on the same ideas (major home builder failures, a bubble forming in tech stocks, etc). It was very strange how the ideas were very similar, so I'll be curious what this year's list brings and I'll post it when it comes out in a few weeks; I did less on the stock market, and more on economics this year.</p>]]>

The share has fallen to a low under $6 that seems to me a level it hasn&rsquo;t seen since it went public in September 1999. As may be remembered, in the summer of 2007 Radware founder Yehuda Zisapel, who served as chairman, named director Chris McCleary as executive chairman of the board, apparently with the intention that it would be easier for McCleary to supervise the moves of Yehuda&rsquo;s son, co-founder and CEO Roy Zisapel.</p><p>By the last board of directors meeting, on November 30, McCleary resigned and the chairman title was passed temporarily to director Orna Berry. On December 2, just two days after the shareholders&rsquo; meeting, director Hebert Anderson resigned for &ldquo;personal reasons&rdquo;, according to a company announcement.</p>]]>

The latter includes a lot of charitable activities, work in the community, parties, little morale-building perks, as well as many other things that help a firm with its image in the community or to attract good people.<br><br>When times gets tight for a company, or for an industry (think dot-com crash), or even the whole economy (i.e., now), a lot of nice-to-haves necessarily go out the window. So when one of my students who works at Cisco (CSCO) told me Friday that they cut out Red Bull to save money &mdash; complete with a memo explaining the cost-benefit analysis &mdash; we both agreed it made a lot of sense.</p>]]>

Most analysts are more concerned with how the network will be monetized and the role it will play in new virtualization and cloud computing initiatives. </span></p>  <p><span>That means that the networking industry needs to articulate its relevance to these initiatives more forcefully as IT automation initiatives continue to connect to the static TCP/IP network. A weak economy will also make the business case a more significant part of the sales process; which will increase the pressure on networking vendors to automate core network services, thereby setting the stage for dynamic network infrastructure capable of keeping up with new dynamic systems and endpoints.</span></p>]]>
